Q)What is ultimate act & purpose of leadership?
Ans) When the CEO or Chairman brings his or her organization to a point where it no longer misses him.
Weak leaders have no trouble doing this but when the helmsman is powerful doing so becomes extremely difficult, if not impossible !!
Q)What sort of leadership quality or characteristic should the Generation-next Leaders have?
Ans) * Performance orientation.
* Learnbility.
* Global mindedness
* Team building
Q)Who could be a CEO today?
Ans) The CEO of today must be a person who can build competent & energetic teams around himself. It is this last act that will determine his legacy within the organization.

Purpose of leadership is well defined,in fact it has been defined in similar way by many great charismatic leaders time to time.I had opportunity to witness such occasion many years ago,when I worked in L&T ,Bombay.At that time ,the founder chairman of L&T, MR.H.H.Larsen used to visit all the factories & offices in Bombay between X'mas day & new year day to wish happy X'mas & new year.He used to shake hands with each & every employee present there.Such was the charisma & popularity Mr.Larsen commanded that employees made it a point to be present on that day without fail.It was as if it was a festival day.That year as usual Mr. Larsen visited our works & we all shook hands with him but somehow one section was forgotten.The employees from that section were very much disappointed & made a huge complaint to Mr.Larsen.Subsequently Mr.Larsen wrote a letter in L&T newsletter 'regretting' this incidence..he further wrote..I can understand your feelings,your love & affection towards me. If you could not shake hands with me that day I apologise but one day I will be no more..then I will not meet you all forever.Then what will you do ? Will you guys just sit back & cry? No,never.From the beginning I have designed such a system in this organisation so that the activities of all the sections & departments are synchronised.Those systems are & should be independent of personalised approach.I hereby advise my managers to continue this practice of building strong & efficient systems in this organisation at all levels. I believe this will make L&T the leader in the field of engineering & technology even if I am not alive..
ReplyDeleteNeedless to say even at that time when he was alive & even after his death, L&T remained the flagship company of Indian industry.
Thanks to CEO for briging up this issue & reviving my nostalgic memories !

ReplyDelete** after self evaluation, if anybody feels insecure of acheiving these leadership qualities, then make the way to your successor and give opportunity to develop the "TEAM"..
** not essential to wait untill the Tree dies from the top ...!!!
